Laser Treatments during Summer in Winnipeg

Laser treatments are medical procedures that use focused beams of light to target specific areas of the skin, often to treat various skin conditions such as acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and laser hair removal.

During a laser treatment, the laser emits a high-energy beam of light that is absorbed by the targeted area of the skin. This energy heats up the skin cells and causes them to break down, which triggers the body's natural healing process to replace the damaged cells with new, healthy ones.

However, the heat generated by the laser can also cause temporary damage to the skin's outer layer, making it more sensitive to external factors like sun exposure. The skin may become red, swollen, and tender after a laser treatment, and it is essential to protect it from the sun's harmful rays to prevent further damage.

Minimize direct sun exposure.

Sun exposure can cause sensitivity in the skin after a laser treatment because the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays can further damage the skin's already compromised barrier. This can lead to a range of issues such as increased redness, dryness, and peeling, and in some cases, it can even cause hyperpigmentation or scarring.

To avoid these issues, it is important to avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks prior to treatment and 2 weeks post treatment. The use of artificial tans should be avoided 2 weeks prior to treatments as skin's natural color or tone is recommended for best results.

Protect yourself from the sun.

Using a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen with a  SPF 30+ when going outside will help to protect the skin from damaging UV rays. It is also recommended to wear protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and hats, to minimize sun exposure. It is ideal to not treat any areas that are sun exposed during the summer months but postpone treatments till the fall/winter season instead.

Laser Hair Removal in Summer

The prime spots for summer laser hair removal are areas shielded from the sun. The bikini and underarms are protected and don’t often have direct sun exposure. These are two areas that can be treated all year around. We recommend avoiding all other laser treatments during the summer.
